SEO vs Google Ads for Tradies: Which Should You Do First?

For most tradies the answer is both, in order. Run Google Ads first to get calls this week, and build local SEO underneath so you can cut the ads back as your rankings take over. Google estimates advertisers bid $2 to $46 to show at the top for tradie searches, depending on the trade (Google keyword data, October 2026). Ongoing local SEO usually costs $500 to $3,500 a month, going by the agency quotes we see.

Key takeaways

  • Google Ads can bring in tradie leads within days. SEO takes 3 to 6 months, but the leads get cheaper over time.
  • Click prices change a lot by trade. Google estimates advertisers bid $5 to $46 to show at the top for plumber searches and $2 to $7 for landscaper searches (Google keyword data, October 2026).
  • Most tradies should run both: ads to cover the wait, SEO as the long-term asset.
  • Once SEO ranks, your cost per lead keeps falling. With ads you pay for every click, every month.
  • The plan: heavier ads early, shift to Google’s free results by month 9 to 12, and keep ads only on your best-paying jobs or quiet seasons.

How fast does each channel bring in tradie leads?

Speed is the biggest practical difference, and for a tradie with an empty calendar it usually decides where to start.

ChannelFirst leadsSteady flowCost over time
Google Ads2 to 7 days3 to 4 weeks (once tuned)Flat or rising
Google Business Profile2 to 6 weeks2 to 3 monthsFalls, then near zero
Local SEO (suburb pages)6 to 12 weeks4 to 6 monthsFalls every month

If you need work this month, ads are the fastest thing you can switch on. If you can wait a few months, SEO is the better value. Most tradies need both at once, which is why the answer is rarely one channel.

Your Google Business Profile sits in the middle. It costs nothing to run, it puts you in the map results, and it often starts bringing calls in weeks rather than months. Our guide on how to rank on Google Maps covers it step by step.

What do Google Ads cost for each trade?

Clicks are sold at auction, so the price depends on how many businesses bid on the same search.

TradeGoogle’s estimated top-of-page bid (Google keyword data, October 2026)Where to start
Electricians$4 to $28. “Electrician near me” gets 40,500 searches a month in Australia.Both. Run ads on urgent and high-value jobs, and start SEO from day one so you’re not paying top prices forever.
Plumbers$5 to $46. “Plumber near me” gets 49,500 searches a month. Both, with SEO pushed hard early. Bids are the highest of these five, so keep ads tight and focused on emergency work.
Painters$4 to $15. “Painters near me” gets 6,600 searches a month.SEO and your Google profile first. Painting jobs are planned, not urgent, so people compare reviews and photos. Add a small ad budget if the calendar is thin.
Cleaners$3 to $14. “End of lease cleaning” gets 6,600 searches a month and “cleaners near me” 5,400.It depends on the work. End of lease jobs are one-off and often booked in a hurry, so ads suit them. Regular home and commercial cleaning brings repeat customers who shop around, so SEO and your Google profile come first.
Landscapers and gardeners$2 to $7. “Landscaping” gets 12,100 searches a month.Ads first. Bids are the lowest of these five, so ads are good value while SEO and your Google profile build.

These are Google’s own estimates of what advertisers bid to show at the top, not what anyone paid. Search numbers are national monthly averages, so your suburbs will be smaller. Urgent searches like “emergency plumber” usually cost the most.

The number that catches tradies out is wasted spend. Without a strong list of negative keywords, a broad “plumber” campaign burns money on people searching for plumber wages, plumbing courses or DIY fixes. We cover the full breakdown in what Google Ads cost in Australia, and how we set up trade campaigns on the Google Ads for tradies page. For plumbers, our SEO for plumbers page shows how leads from Google’s free results avoid paying for those clicks at all. The short version: blocking the wrong searches matters more than the click price.

How much should you spend on ads?

Enough to get useful data. For most local trade businesses, $1,000 to $2,000 a month in ad spend is a realistic start, paid to Google and separate from any management fee. Below about $500 a month in a competitive trade, the budget runs out too fast to learn what works.

Here’s how the maths works. Say a plumber pays $30 a click and 1 in 10 clicks turns into an enquiry. That’s $300 per enquiry before any management fee. The same plumber ranking in the free results for those searches pays nothing per click. That gap is why SEO matters most in the trades with the dearest clicks.

When SEO is the better investment for a tradie

SEO wins when you can handle the wait and you want a lead source you own rather than rent. It’s the right main investment if you have enough cash or work to carry you for three to six months. It also helps if your competitors don’t already own the free results in your suburbs, and if you’re tired of a cost per lead that never goes down.

The build-up is the whole point. A tradie ranking for “electrician [suburb]” across the eight suburbs they cover gets enquiries from people who chose to call them, with no click cost once the rankings hold. Those rankings keep working while you’re on the tools, on holiday or asleep. Paid ads stop the moment the card declines. That’s how our SEO for tradies work is set up.

Prioritise SEO if:

  • You already have steady work and can build a channel that pays off over a year.
  • The top free spots in your suburbs are winnable, which is common in regional and outer suburban areas.
  • You get repeat work, like regular garden maintenance or cleaning, so each customer is worth more over time.
  • Your clicks cost so much that the jobs don’t cover them.

When Google Ads is the better investment for a tradie

Ads win when speed matters more than cost. Ads turn the tap on in days. Run ads as your main channel if:

  • You’ve just started out, or just lost a big client, and need work now.
  • Your work is urgent, like emergency plumbing or electrical faults, where people call the first business they see.
  • You’re moving into a new suburb or testing a new service before committing to SEO for it.
  • Your competitors already hold the free results with years of pages and links behind them.
  • You have a short busy season and need to catch the work while it’s there.

Ads also work as research. The searches that turn into jobs in a paid campaign are the ones worth chasing with SEO. Running ads first gives you real data on which services and suburbs bring in work, so you aim your SEO at the winners instead of guessing.

Why running both works better

When your ad and your free listing both show on the same page, people see your name twice. That can build trust and make them more likely to call you over the next tradie. And the ad data keeps telling you which searches to build pages for.

The plan most tradies should follow

Months 1 to 3: Run Google Ads at a level that keeps the calendar full. Start the SEO build from day one: website, Google Business Profile and suburb pages. Accept that ads are carrying you.

Months 4 to 8: SEO starts bringing in work. Keep ads running but stop raising the budget. Watch the share of enquiries move from paid to free results each month.

Months 9 to 12: Google’s free results are now your main source. Cut ads back to your best-paying services or your slowest season. Your total leads should hold steady while your cost per job drops.

So which should you do first?

If you don’t have enough cash or work to carry you for three months, or you need leads now, start with Google Ads and build SEO alongside it. If you have steady work and can wait six months or more, lean toward SEO from the start and use a small ad budget to fill gaps. Either way, both belong in the plan.

Our Growth plan is $275 a week with no setup fee. It covers ongoing SEO every month and one managed ad account. Your ad spend is paid straight to Google with no markup. Our Spark plan, at $100 a week, is a website with basic SEO built in and your Google profile, but it doesn’t include ongoing SEO or ads. Domination is $450 a week plus a $1,500 setup, everything in Growth with more ad accounts and content. All plans are weekly with no lock-in contract. On Spark and Growth the website is ours until you’ve made 26 weekly payments. Leave earlier and you can buy it out by paying the weeks left. Frequently asked questions

Should a tradie do SEO or Google Ads first?

Most tradies should start Google Ads and build SEO at the same time. Ads bring in leads within days, which covers the 3 to 6 month wait while SEO ranks. Once rankings hold, the cost per lead from SEO keeps falling while ads cost the same every month, so the budget moves from paid to free results over time.

How much do Google Ads cost for a tradie in Australia?

It depends on the trade. Google estimates advertisers bid $5 to $46 to show at the top for plumber searches, $4 to $28 for electricians, $4 to $15 for painters, $3 to $14 for cleaners and $2 to $7 for landscapers (Google keyword data, October 2026). Most local trade businesses need $1,000 to $2,000 a month in ad spend to get useful results. The biggest cost factor is whether the campaign blocks searches like wages, courses and DIY.

How long until SEO works for a trade business?

Your Google profile can bring calls in 2 to 6 weeks. Suburb pages usually take 4 to 6 months to bring steady enquiries. Less competitive trades and regional areas rank faster than metro electricians or plumbers. The leads get cheaper every month as rankings build, which is the opposite of paid ads.

Can I just do SEO and skip Google Ads?

Yes, if you can wait 3 to 6 months for SEO to bring in steady leads without it hurting cashflow. Most tradies can’t, which is why ads are useful to cover the gap. Skipping ads makes sense for an established business with steady work that wants to build the cheaper long-term channel without time pressure.

Can I do SEO myself?

You can do the basics: set up your Google Business Profile, ask every customer for a review, make sure your site loads fast on a phone, and write one page for each service and suburb. In competitive trades and metro areas, the link and technical work usually needs someone who does it every day. If budget is tight, start with your Google profile. It’s free and often the fastest win.

Is Google Ads or SEO better value long term for tradies?

SEO is better long-term value because the cost per lead keeps falling once rankings are set, and the asset keeps working without paying per click. Google Ads is faster and more predictable in the short term, but you pay for every click for as long as it runs. For a tradie planning to be in business in three years, SEO can win on total cost per job.
